Angkor Awakens: Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Royal palaces, jungle temples and a Tonle Sap bird sanctuary.

Cambodia 8 min read

"A nine-day Cambodia journey from the French-colonial boulevards of Phnom Penh to the jungle temples of Angkor. Private food tours, boutique riverside stays and a dawn visit to Angkor Wat are paired with a day of your choosing — an ethical elephant encounter, a silent Vespa sidecar ride through the back-temple lanes, or a Tonle Sap bird sanctuary with the OSMOSE community conservation project."

Arrival in Phnom Penh — Royal Palace & Street Food

Traditional wooden stilt houses on the floodplains near the Tonle Sap, Cambodia

You arrive into Phnom Penh, the manageable riverside capital at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, and check in for two nights at Treeline Urban Resort — a leafy boutique stay tucked into the heart of the city. The afternoon is given over to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, with gilded roofs, an emerald Buddha and a floor of five thousand hand-cut silver tiles. That evening your guide leads you on a private tuk-tuk food tour through the night markets: num banh chok rice noodles with green fish curry paste, beef lok lac with lime and Kampot pepper, and a strong Khmer coffee with condensed milk. The night ends with a riverside drink on Sisowath Quay as the city’s residents come out for their evening promenade.

Key Highlights

  • ✓Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda — gilded roofs, emerald Buddha and five thousand silver floor tiles
  • ✓Private tuk-tuk food tour through the night markets of Phnom Penh

North to Siem Reap — Angkor Wat at Dawn

Angkor Wat temple silhouetted against a sunrise sky in Siem Reap, Cambodia

From Phnom Penh you travel north to Siem Reap — the gateway town to the temples of Angkor — pausing en route for a Cambodian lunch in Kampong Thom. You settle in for the rest of your stay at Palace Gate Hotel & Resort by EHM, a boutique property opposite the Royal Residence with a large pool and lush gardens, just minutes from the Angkor temples. The following morning you’re up at dawn, your private guide leading you to the causeway of Angkor Wat itself. The largest religious monument on earth sits five-spired above a moat; at sunrise the silhouettes are mirrored in the water and the whole complex turns from grey to gold. The afternoon is yours — poolside, or a first gentle explore of Siem Reap’s craft shops and colonial quarter.

Key Highlights

  • ✓Dawn at Angkor Wat with the five spires mirrored in the moat
  • ✓Scenic overland transfer through the Cambodian countryside
  • ✓Boutique stay at the Palace Gate Hotel & Resort by EHM, Siem Reap

Angkor Thom — Bayon, Ta Prohm and the lesser-known temples

Massive banyan tree growing over the entrance of a Cambodian temple ruin near Siem Reap

Three days inside the Angkor Archaeological Park with your private guide and air-conditioned vehicle. The first morning is the Bayon, at the heart of Angkor Thom — more than fifty towers, every one carrying the same serene four-faced head looking out in every direction. The afternoon goes to Ta Prohm, the temple the jungle has reclaimed: vast silk-cotton and strangler-fig trees growing over carved stone blocks, the same surreal sight immortalised in Tomb Raider. The second day is a deeper, gentler exploration of the lesser-visited temples — Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei and the smaller Roluos group, the site of the earliest Khmer capital. The third day, a relaxed morning at Artisans d’Angkor — the silk farm and craft workshop reviving traditional Khmer craftsmanship — before an optional afternoon return to Bayon for golden hour, when the stone faces catch the warm light and you’ll have them almost to yourself.

Key Highlights

  • ✓Bayon — the giant stone faces at the heart of Angkor Thom
  • ✓Ta Prohm — jungle-engulfed ruins with trees growing over the temple walls
  • ✓Artisans d’Angkor silk farm — traditional Khmer craftsmanship revived

Your Choice & Departure

Tree roots engulfing ancient stones at Ta Prohm temple, Angkor, Cambodia

Days spent on the excursion of your choosing — we’ll discuss the options together before you travel. A Garuda’s Trail by VespaTwin is a silent Vespa side-car ride through the back lanes between the temples, led by a local guide — perfect for travellers who like the wind in their hair and picture-perfect stops away from the crowds. The Sisters tour pairs Banteay Srei — the exquisite pink-sandstone ‘Citadel of Women’, with the finest relief carvings in the entire Angkor complex — with Banteay Samre and lunch at a family-run restaurant. The Kbal Spean day combines a short jungle hike to the ‘River of a Thousand Lingas’ — a sacred mountain stream carved by the Khmer — with an afternoon at Banteay Srei. The Kulen Elephant Forest is a community-run sanctuary where rescued logging elephants now roam freely: a particularly gentle, properly ethical elephant encounter. Or, for naturalists, the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary on the Tonle Sap, run with the OSMOSE community conservation foundation (small supplement). On your final morning, return to the causeway of Angkor Wat for one last quiet sunrise before transferring to Siem Reap airport. Should you wish to extend your Indochina journey, Cambodia also pairs beautifully with Laos — the two share a Mekong heritage and the same unhurried pace.

Key Highlights

  • ✓Choose your last-day excursion — VespaTwin, Banteay Srei, Kbal Spean, Kulen Elephant Forest or Prek Toal
  • ✓A final quiet sunrise back at Angkor Wat before departing
  • ✓Pairs naturally with Laos to extend your Indochina journey
