Destination Guide

Discover Cuba

Cuba, a captivating island nestled in the Caribbean, has long been a magnet for travellers seeking more than just an island holiday. Cuba’s place in the history books has earned it the “must-see” destination of the Caribbean islands for the culturally curious.

Cuba can often feel like it has a split identity between local and tourist. There are two different currencies. Many tourists stick to the confines of a resort hotel in Varadero. Despite this, it is possible to discover Cuba’s identity, connect with local life and get a better understanding of this often misunderstood island.

The capital city, Havana, entices visitors with its old-world charm and vibrant atmosphere. Exploring the UNESCO-listed Old Havana is a must, where cobbled streets lead to colourful colonial buildings and bustling plazas.

Wander through the lesser-known neighbourhoods of Vedado or Miramar, where local life thrives. Dive into the world of Afro-Cuban music and dance at the Callejón de Hamel, a vibrant alleyway adorned with captivating murals and pulsating rhythms.

Venture beyond the well-trodden tourist paths to the western province of Pinar del Rio and to Viñales Valley. Famous for its dramatic limestone mogotes and lush tobacco fields, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a glimpse into rural Cuban life. Explore the vast cave systems that wind beneath the surface or hike up to the Mural de la Prehistoria, an enormous mural depicting the evolution of life on Earth.

Heading southeast to the central region, Trinidad entices with its well-preserved colonial architecture and vibrant music scene. While the town’s historic centre is a UNESCO treasure in itself, a detour to nearby Topes de Collantes reveals a natural paradise hidden in the Escambray Mountains. Hike through lush forests and swim in natural pools amongst beautiful waterfalls.

In the eastern part of the country lies Baracoa, a charming coastal town surrounded by lush mountains. Those who make the effort to travel this far east are rewarded with picturesque beaches, cocoa farms, coffee plantations and wonderful natural scenery. There is also the opportunity to taste authentic Cuban cuisine: indulge in the local specialty Cucurucho, a delicious cone-shaped treat made of coconut, honey and nuts while savouring the rhythms of traditional Afro-Cuban music.

With careful planning you can engage with locals, embrace the vibrant street life, and explore natural wonders beyond the tourist hotspots and really connect with this mesmerizing island.
